Policy Reforms
Policy reforms have always been the utmost prerequisite for the development of underprivileged segments of society. As a campaigner; along with the awareness initiatives, Mr. Omer worked for a long-term solution of the problems through advocacy for policy reforms.
His policy reforms efforts always got positive results. Ranging from the provision of better health facilities and improved legislation for women to reforms in the curriculum for better future of children, Omer has an excellent track record in altering the policies for the greater benefit of the general public.
On his proposal, Federal Ministry of Health launched Rs.3.5 billion worth National Breast Cancer Screening Program in coordination with Pink Ribbon Pakistan. Later on, a “Trial Cancer Registry” was also formed to archive exact data analysis of the cancer situation in the country. Working at the same pace, Mr. Omer managed to get Breast Cancer issue inducted in the National LHW Program.
Other than health he also focused on women political participation. Due to his efforts combined with other stakeholders, back in 2000, a bill was passed by the National Assembly of Pakistan which increased women quota in the parliament up to 33%.
Further in legislative reforms, Mr. Omer in coordination with National Commission on Status of Women worked on amendments in anti-honor killing and anti-rape laws. Whereas at provincial level he successfully managed to engage legislators for the promulgation of domestic violence bill in the province of Punjab and working on the same in KPK.
On the other hand, recently, with his efforts in coordination with Provincial Commission on Status of Women, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has introduced “Protection of Women against Workplace Harassment Bill”. Indeed, a great millstone has been achieved for women’s right.
Launching of the first Women Chamber of Commerce in 2003 was also a revolutionary enterprise that led thousands of women towards their economic independence.
Pakistan’s educational policy, guidelines and curriculum did not include information on reproductive health and life skills, which is very essential because it can critically shape adolescent’s lives as well as the future of the society. Omer Aftab took the initiative to break the silence around LSBE in families and communities under Ehad Campaign and managed the notification of Pakistan’s first LSBE curriculum by the Ministry of Education.
